There’s a particular kind of magic you only feel when you walk — but not just from one destination to the next without noticing the environment . No, when you move slowly enough, notice carefully enough, the stones beneath your feet start to whisper. The streets, buildings, and harbors of Old Monterey do that. On my walk through the historic district of Old Monterey, I found more than just pretty architecture or seaside charm — I found layered time, complexity, and memory. I’d planned to explore the Wharf when history caught my eye first! It felt more like meeting the beginning of a place rather than just sightseeing.

Where the Walk Begins: At the Water’s Edge

Most journeys into Old Monterey start near the marina, where rows of masts rise like a makeshift forest and the water holds that familiar Pacific calm. Boats bob in their slips, gulls coast overhead, and the sense of the modern coast is strong — leisure, sailing, movement, sunlight.

But just a few steps away, the past emerges.

Monterey Harbor Marker ©2025

The Custom House, California’s oldest government building, sits right beside the shoreline. Its pale adobe walls and teal-painted beams speak to an era when the harbor wasn’t about weekend cruises but international trade, political power, and constant change. A massive bronze anchor rests nearby, weathered into a green patina — a quiet reminder that Monterey has always been shaped by arrivals, ambitions, and the inevitability of movement. There was a sign outside the Custom House, “FREE TOUR,” and it was starting in only a few minutes?! Immediate YES.

Following the Path of History

Before we begin I am shocked to learn I stand at California’s first Government building, “The Custom House.” Now a museum, it is only the starting point of the tour today. As we leave the museum, we are shown, embedded in the pavement, a small circular medallion which said:

Chemin de l’Histoire — the Path of History.

Chemin de l’Histoire — the Path of History path medallion. ©2025

Following these markers takes you along a self-guide tour as well! It feels like being gently guided into Monterey’s layered past.

From what I learned, before Spanish or Mexican governance, long before the American flag rose over the Custom House, this land held lives like the Rumsien people for thousands of years. Their presence is the foundation beneath everything — the gardens, the wharf, the street grid, the adobes.

That awareness shifts the pace.

You begin to walk differently.

More present. More curious.

And the city rewards that curiosity.

Streets Where Eras Overlap

One of the first structures along the path is the First Brick House, built in 1847. It’s small and unassuming — the sort of place someone could walk by without much notice — yet it represents the moment Monterey shifted from adobe to brick, from traditional building methods to new ones brought by newcomers.

Just beyond it, you encounter a different chapter entirely: the maritime world of the mid-1800s. At the Old Whaling Station, a huge iron try-pot sits in the courtyard, once used to melt whale blubber into oil. Nearby lies the rare whalebone sidewalk, a checkerboard of white and weathered blocks — a physical remnant of a global industry that shaped this coastline long before tourists shaped it in other ways.

Despite the weight of the history, the site is calm now, held by gardens and courtyards. It’s the kind of juxtaposition Monterey does well: the beauty and the truth sitting side by side.

California’s First Theater & the Quiet Corners of the Past

Wander a bit farther and you arrive at California’s First Theater, its dark wood exterior shaded by trees and framed by a gentle slope of Pacific Street. It’s humble, a little creaky, and thoroughly charming — but more importantly, it’s a reminder that storytelling has always been essential here. Fun Fact: It has also recently re-opened for plays! More details here.

Long before film studios, before digital everything, people gathered in this wooden room to laugh, to listen, to feel connected. The footprint of the building is small, yet it holds an enormous amount of cultural memory.

And between these larger moments, you find the quieter details:

Arched courtyards, fountains dotted with lily pads, tiled benches warmed by the afternoon sun. These spaces soften the complexity of the past and offer a moment of reflection along the way — a way of breathing through the history rather than rushing past it.

Why Walking Matters Here

Old Monterey isn’t a place you absorb from a map or a plaque. It’s a place you understand through movement. Through standing still in the marina breeze, stepping over stone thresholds, wandering through gardens shaped by different eras. The landscape itself carries the arc of the region — Indigenous continuance, colonial imprint, maritime labor, cultural reinvention.

Pacific House diorama showing layers of Monterey. ©2025

Nothing about Monterey’s story is linear.

Nothing is one-dimensional.

And that is exactly what makes it compelling.

Walking these streets felt like an invitation to see history as something alive — not past tense, but ongoing. A companion rather than a backdrop.

The Recipe for a Layered History

Some of the things I learned that day was that although Monterey’s waterfront looks peaceful today, this small stretch of coastline has lived many lives. It was home for thousands of years to e.g. the Rumsen Ohlone, long before Spain claimed Alta California in the 1700s and reshaped the region through missions and military control. In the early 1800s, under Mexican rule, Monterey grew into a bustling port—its hide-and-tallow trade, foreign ships, and constant political upheaval all flowing through the Custom House, the oldest government building in California. And in 1846, during the Mexican–American War, the American flag was raised here, marking yet another dramatic shift in power.

There’s far more history in these few blocks than any single post can cover, but walking through the Custom House, the Pacific House, and their surrounding courtyards gives a glimpse into the layered worlds that once converged here: Indigenous communities, Spanish colonists, Mexican officials, sailors, merchants, soldiers, and families, U.S. government—each leaving a trace.

Closing Reflection

Old Monterey reminds us that history isn’t something you leave behind. It’s something woven into the ground you walk on — decisions and people that shaped what we see and so much of what we don’t. They are present, remembered-whether you notice it at first or not. These streets and courtyards and harbors remind us that beauty and complexity can coexist, that memory lives in landscapes, and that awareness deepens everything we experience.

A pause spent walking through this place felt grounding, humbling, and unexpectedly hopeful — the kind of presence I want to carry with me into whatever comes next. Until next week, try exploring by just following what catches your eye. You will be so incredibly inspired by what awaits your curiosity with open arms.

Point Lobos, Pauses, and the Power of Creative Return || ThereGoesSaraRose.com

After a season of stillness, I returned to the cliffs of Point Lobos—and remembered exactly why I started this blog. Between grad school deadlines and IDFieldGuide.com, I’ve been building something bigger than content. I’ve been building capacity. Here’s what’s been growing behind the scenes, and what’s coming next for ThereGoesSaraRose.com.

TRAVEL. DESIGN. SHARE. ThereGoesSaraRose.com

Hello, I’m back!

When I stepped away from posting about travel, it wasn’t because I stopped loving it. I stepped away to rebuild, reroute, and reimagine how creativity shows up in my life instead of “living for the weekends”. The intent was always to return when it felt right, after a season of silence.

Sara and Fang. Monterey Beach, California. 2025.

That is not to say any of the last few years were easy. To uproot yourself after pivotal losses…from what you are comfortable doing to the life your soul aches for…can be mental war, takes time, help from others, and an endless amount of patience with yourself. I wanted clean, sea-salt air in my lungs, and surroundings that were thriving with nature and wildlife…a place that inspired creativity and healing. And most recently, Point Lobos delivered. But before we get to that… let’s talk about what’s shifted.

Part I: Why I Went Quiet

It wasn’t just burnout. What I needed was an intentional introspection, a full system reset. I asked myself: “What does a future that lets me do more of what I love, look like? What changes do I need to make so I can thrive and not just survive?” That answer led me to a new job, then a new location and graduate school.

Graduate School & Growth

I have been pursuing a Master’s in Instructional Science & Technology since August 2024. If you couldn’t tell from this blog, I love sharing things I’ve recently learned with others. I already loved changing the reader’s perspective, so this academic program was right up my alley. I am studying at a California State University near a paradise-like location with so many places to explore. Now, I’m deep in my research thesis, and you can follow more of that journey at www.IDFieldGuide.com. This has made for long days. There are timelines in every corner of my life. There is writing and more writing. I have been exploring and rediscovering what lights me up in between moments of intense emotions. I have begun to understand how healing a beautiful environment can be. At times, I have never been more at peace.

I initially felt lost, but I was growing. Strategically. Intuitively. So yes, this blog paused. But beneath the surface? So much was taking root. And now — it’s blooming again. This space has always been my soul’s portfolio. The camera never stopped clicking. And have I got stories to share.

Part II: Point Lobos

Let’s just say this: if you ever forget why the world is worth writing about, go to Point Lobos. The wind moves differently there. The land shifts from forest to cliff. Then it changes from tide pool and to black beaches. It’s like there is a new secret every few steps. It’s a protected land for a reason. Check out photos of what it looked like through my eyes below. You can also check out my socials for videos. More coming soon!

Point Lobos State Reserve, Entrance.
(Sara Rose, ©2025)

We were the last to enter the park before a sign went up, Parking Lot Full. “Oh geez, Fang. Are we going to have to turn around?” I ask, fully expecting a reply. My dog responds with his typical husky, harumph. “I hope not either,” as I pull forward to the ranger’s booth. $10, the appropriate Service Dog quiz later (pets are not permitted in the Reserve, check out more of those details here), and we are on our way to the Bird Island trail. Upon arrival, there are immediate beautiful views, and they continue throughout the rest of our afternoon.

  • Bird Island trail beach, Point Lobos State Reserve.
  • Bird Island Trail - Point Lobos State Reserve
  • Bird island Trail, Point Lobos State Reserve.
The Hike

Not only was the trail to Bird Island much easier than anticipated, it was fairly accessible as well. We ended up with more time and energy than I thought; As this was more of a walk on the edge with fantastic views, I opted for another trail. Near the end of the Bird Island trail, it splits off into different options. One is a steep staircase that leads down to a beach, a short walk to Bird Island, or a third route up the hill to the South Plateau. We decided to take this upper trail.

  • Granite Point Beach, Point Lobos State Reserve.

The trail was much longer, and more steep, with twists and turns through the forest. It felt like we traveled through Middle-earth to a new realm entirely. On the other side of the Reserve, the trail resumed to a more beaten path. However, the beaches were small rocky bays with dark sand. They were not bright and sparkly but eerily breathtaking in their own way. The old Carmel Mission stood starkly against the fog and deep green of the local trees. This place makes me feel as though I have been yanked into the past, into a California barely disturbed. I know I will have to come back soon and explore more of this breathtakingly stunning Reserve.

Learn more about The Point Lobos State Reserve, here!

My dog can’t read but I am still going to give him credit for being the best hiking partner I can ask for. When I was struggling, and I’d grab his harness handle and say, “Let’s go!” he pulled me up a steep path without hesitation, like it was the most fun game he can imagine. On the flip side, he goes slowly with me down slopes and stairs, he walks behind me on command when people are approaching us on the trail. We do still have a lot of learning to do together. But my dog is one of the most significant changes to my life (as of July 2023) and I can not imagine a better canine friend. Kudos to Fang and to many more fur-lined adventures!

Part III: What’s Next

ThereGoesSaraRose.com isn’t just reviving – it’s evolving. It’s not a polished blog, expect:

  • ✈️ Updates from my past and current travels. Yes, I make time to go outside even in between all the due dates!
  • 🎓 Behind-the-scenes commentary about grad school, the book release, IDFieldGuide.com, life pivots, and messy wins. Make sure to check it out if YOU are interested in digital education design!
  • 🔥 Reflections about creativity, transitions, burnout, joy, and starting over.

Closing Note:

To those of you who stuck around: thank you.

To those of you just landing here: welcome.

To the next version of me reading this post months from now: you did it again!

Let’s keep moving. Creatively. Curiously. Always.

Hello, fellow adventurers and art enthusiasts!

If your passions include travel, food, and art, then Sacramento, California, has a hidden gem just waiting for you to uncover. On the second Saturday of each month, the streets of Midtown Sacramento come alive with creativity, community, and culture during the Second Saturday Art Walk (with a VIP Tour option) [1]! As someone who thrives on exploring vibrant local scenes, I couldn’t resist diving into this artistic extravaganza, and I’m thrilled to share my experience with you all.

Note: This Art Walk changes locations and artists each month. The Vip Tour options are NEW, this was the FIRST! Share your thoughts on the May 2024 Second Saturday Art Walk in the comments below!

The Heartbeat of Midtown: Where Art and Community Converge

Sacramento’s Midtown district is a lively neighborhood known for its eclectic mix of restaurants, boutiques, and galleries. But on the Second Saturday of each month, it transforms into an open-air art festival that showcases the incredible talent of local artists. We even made a stop through Lavender Heights, a landmark of Sacramento’s LGBTQ+ Community [2]! (Psst, get excited as the Lavender Heights Library may be an upcoming stop on the Vip Tour soon!) From 5 PM to 9 PM, the streets are filled with art lovers, curious travelers, and supportive locals, all eager to experience the magic of the Sacramento art scene.

Art in Every Corner: Diverse and Dynamic Displays

Reminiscent of my first stroll through the streets of Sacramento, I was struck by the diversity of murals on display. Permanent art, we stopped to muse over meanings of the murals merging with walls and corners as if hidden Banksy installations of Sacramento. These conversations were fascinating as most of our group was from outside the area, commenting with fresh eyes.

To be quite honest, I could do a full tour of more murals in the beautiful golden hours of the day and been a happy camper. There are plenty of great coffee and breakfast locations in Sacramento, maybe we can try a self-guided tour soon! Build your self-guided tour at Wide Open Walls [3]!

The Tour spanned multiple blocks, with stops (and Vip snacks & drinks!) scattered throughout. Whether you’re a fan of contemporary paintings, intricate sculptures, or thought-provoking photography, there’s something for everyone. However, it was evident the majority of Sacramentens were not as interested to start so early in the day and, with the heat, I could see why!

Favorite Gallery

One of my favorite stops was the Self Designs Art Gallery on 18th street in Sacramento, CA [4]. This multi-artist studio space features an impressive array of artworks from resident artists. I spent a good chunk of time listening to the artist and owner of the gallery, whose name is Self, as he shared what it was like to discover a talent for drawing in adulthood. He was able to give us a tour of the Gallery and outside space where they host community events and artists. One of walls in the Gallery was dedicated to art students and another, a space to live painting. Anytime I can listen to an artist and how they work to make a difference in their community, I am at peace. Leaving Self Design Studio, I left feeling like I’d met a reincarnated Van Gogh, teaching us to create humbly, without fear, unaware of the depth of their own talents.

Favorite Art Piece

The VIP Tour option includes a stop at a private artists workspace and gallery. I was thoroughly impressed with the varied backgrounds of the different artists we were able to meet that evening, this stop included. An educated artist, Paul Benavides pushed to expose his early years to some of the best minds in the field. Now he creates through his, “rage against capitalism and the governmental and societal forces propelling it forward to our ultimate ruin.” [5]

M2. (2011) Acrylic 65, pigment dispersions, Sharpie over canvas. 96” x 72”. Artist: Paul Benavidez.

This was one of my favorite pieces of the evening. It is if an electron microscope snapped a photo in a moment mimicking the catalytic chemical inception of the Big Bang Theory. The lines and movement remind of the space between fingers in Michael Angelo’s God and Adam section of the Sistine Chapel. This piece made me humbled to wonder, “It is Science vs Spirituality or is it Science and Spirituality?”

Artistic Rights

There were many incredible art pieces of the evening, and many not shared in this article. Although this is a not-for-profit blog aimed at inspiring you to experience locations yourself, art is protected by copyright laws. If an artists or location requests No Photography or the artist was not present to give permission, their artwork is not featured as a main photo on this blog but may included in a gallery (photo collage) or in a photo background. As an artist myself, I aim to be inspired by and promote others. So get out there and support your fellow artists! Please contact Sara@ThereGoesSaraRose.com if you wish to communicate on any art piece promoted here (i.e. for prompt corrections or removal.)

Culinary Delights: Savoring Midtown’s Best Bites

No art walk would be complete without indulging in some delectable local cuisine, and as part of the VIP Tour, it came with the ticket! Midtown Sacramento boasts a fantastic food scene, and the Second Saturday Art Walk offers an opportunity to sample it. Although I couldn’t resist trying a few different options, my no means was I capable of pausing to take any snack-selfies; I worked up my appetite!

Wall Art of Der Biergarten-Sacramento, CA. Sara Rose, ©2024.

As the Tour ended at an Art Block Party, we made our last stop a sit-down experience, I recommend making a reservation at one of the many excellent restaurants in the area. As I had other plans for the evening-I sipped and relaxed in the cooling mist, waiting for friends to arrive. (Check out the rest of my evening at The Four Palms!)

Live Performances and Interactive Art: Engaging All Senses

The Second Saturday Art Walk isn’t just about visual art; it’s a multi-sensory experience. Throughout the night, I encountered live musicians, and several types of crafters at the Block Party. The evening was filled with different art, music, food, and cultures, creating a dynamic and immersive atmosphere.

Something to note for me was the vast difference in each in a community project. Connecting with these artists, it is always a struggle on knowing how to value your time, know your worth and price your pieces to financially fuel your passion. It was a beautiful reminder of how art can bring people together and create something truly unique.

Tips for First-Time Visitors: Making the Most of Your Art Walk Experience

  1. Wear Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so make sure you’re dressed comfortably.
  2. Bring Cash: While many vendors accept cards, having cash on hand makes transactions smoother, especially for smaller purchases and tips for street performers.
  3. Arrive Early: If you want to avoid the heat! Or, if taking the VIP Tour, give yourself time at the first location to also check out the art before your Tour begins.
  4. Stay Hydrated & Safe: Sacramento can get quite warm, even in the evening. Although water is offered at most of the stops, carry a large water bottle to stay hydrated. And don’t forget your sun-protection!
  5. Support Local Artists: If you fall in love with a piece of art, consider buying it. Supporting local artists helps keep the community vibrant and creative.

Final Thoughts: Why You Shouldn’t Miss Sacramento’s Second Saturday Art Walk

The Second Saturday Art Walk in Sacramento is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of creativity, community, and culture. Whether you’re a seasoned art aficionado or just looking for a unique way to spend an evening, this monthly gathering offers something special for everyone. I left feeling inspired, connected, and eager to return.

If you find yourself in Sacramento on the second Saturday of the month, don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the local art scene. Trust me, it’s an experience you won’t forget!

Until next time, keep exploring, savoring, and creating!

With wanderlust and creativity,
Sara Rose

🛡️💪 Prioritizing Safety as a Travel Blogger 💪🛡️

Stay safe! In the face of a relentless stalker, I refused to let fear silence my creativity but I had to ensure my safety. Join me as I share my journey of survival and rediscovering the joy of content creation. Together, we’ll rise above adversity and inspire others to reclaim their passions. #TriumphOverAdversity #ContentCreation

TRAVEL. ART. FOOD. ThereGoesSaraRose.com

Hello, fellow travel enthusiasts and nerdlings! I must share a personal experience that shook me to the core. I stopped sharing any personal content, all but disappeared from the internet, until recently. My perspective has changed and you deserve to know why. It is not a happy tale; It is a public record and I now must share it with you, the reader to clear the slate. I have gone through enough that I’ve learned being vulnerable is crucial to growth.

As a travel blogger, I’ve always cherished the freedom and excitement that comes with exploring new destinations. However, there are times when the unexpected happens, and our safety becomes the top priority. If you feel like you are ever in a similar situation get help, and find support here. In this blog post, I want to shed light on my encounter with someone who tried to scare me, stalk me, or even hurt me, and how it led me to prioritize my well-being over content creation.

The Disturbing Reality

Just like any other travel blogger, I’ve always strived to create captivating content and share my adventures in some form. However, in 2021, my journey took an unexpected turn. A family member of mine got very ill and required end-of-life care. I agreed to help.

In the middle of caretaking and content creation, I was receiving disturbing images, controlling messages, and death threats in separate social media DMs. I assumed this was Twitch viewer(s) being trolls, a common occurrence at the time. It was a distressing situation that went on for far too long.

It reached a point that required immediate action. The point was while I was live streaming in Los Angeles, this person began to message me in live chat. I noticed the difference in messages from the rest of the viewers and knew, “SO YOU ARE IN LA RIGHT NOW, ARE YOU?” and “I CAN SEE YOU,” eerily similar in tone to my social media trolls. As a new Twitch user, however, they made a crucial mistake. They accidentally created their Twitch username with their real name.

This was someone I knew.

This was my sick family member.

I knew this person was not capable of actually traveling to Los Angeles due to medical issues so I continued the rest of my trip. I tried to play tourist in between applying to jobs and collecting good content. Looking at myself through a photographer’s lens though, it was evident how the news affected this girl in the photos, still trying so hard. I was a shell of myself.

Prioritizing Safety

In the face of this alarming situation, I knew I had to take decisive steps to protect myself. My mental and physical well-being became my utmost concern. I tried to find out the reason for this disgusting behavior from this family member but now that the mask was off, the obsession and hate had no boundaries. The onslaught continued but became more personal. When they told me they tried to hire someone to hurt me, I reached out to the authorities. A detective was assigned and a case began. Months later, after self-representing in court, I successfully obtained a life-long restraining order in 2022. There is no guarantee a person like that will obey a restraining order, but they do lose access to firearms. It was a challenging decision, but one that was necessary for my safety and peace of mind.

The Interruption

As I embarked on this journey of waiting for the court system and the trial date, I had to put my travel and live stream content creation on hold. I was not ready to share the betrayal and the abusive patient/family behavior. I still have yet to wrap my head around what family can do to their blood. While it was a difficult decision, I knew that my well-being had to come first. It became a period of reflection, self-care, and regaining control over my life. I am immensely grateful for the support I received from my loved ones and the legal system, which played a vital role in ensuring my safety.

Moving Forward

After making some life changes, and getting the mental health support I needed, I am in a different mindset. Now that I have taken the necessary steps to protect myself, I am gradually getting back into content creation. However, this experience has taught me a valuable lesson: We cannot hide from our story while traveling or creating. We travel and create to understand life. Creation is a voice of authenticity not to be stifled. Prioritizing Mental Health and personal safety, even in the world of travel blogging, deserves all the time it takes. It’s crucial for all of us to be aware of our surroundings, trust our instincts, and take necessary precautions to stay safe during our adventures.

What YOU Can Do!

Stalking is a serious issue that can cause immense distress and fear. As a live streaming travel blogger, your personal information and whereabouts are more accessible to the public, making it crucial to take proactive steps to protect yourself. If you find yourself being stalked or harassed, here’s what you can do:

1️⃣ Prioritize your safety: Your safety should always be the top priority. Trust your instincts and take any threats or concerning behaviors seriously. Reach out to your local law enforcement authorities to report the incidents and seek guidance on how to protect yourself.

2️⃣ Document evidence: Keep a detailed record of all stalking incidents, including dates, times, locations, and descriptions of the events. Save any messages, emails, or social media interactions as evidence. This documentation will be invaluable when seeking legal protection.

3️⃣ Seek legal advice: Consult with a lawyer who specializes in stalking cases to understand your rights and legal options. They can guide you through the process of obtaining a restraining order, which can provide legal protection and establish boundaries between you and the stalker.

4️⃣ Strengthen security measures: Take steps to enhance your personal security. This may include adjusting your social media privacy settings, using pseudonyms, being cautious about sharing personal information, and considering additional security measures, such as installing surveillance cameras or alarm systems.

5️⃣ Seek support: Dealing with the aftermath of stalking can be emotionally challenging. Reach out to friends, family, or support groups who can provide understanding, empathy, and guidance. Consider seeking professional counseling to help you process the experience and regain a sense of security.

Remember, you are not alone in this journey. Many resources are available to support you through this difficult time. By taking proactive steps, obtaining a restraining order, and prioritizing your safety, you can regain control over your life and continue pursuing your passion as a live-streaming travel blogger.

As I resume my blogging journey, I want to emphasize the significance of vulnerability. Stay strong, stay vigilant, and never hesitate to seek help when needed. Your safety and well-being matter above all else. It’s essential to be vigilant, trust your instincts, and take immediate action if you ever find yourself in a threatening situation. Remember, your well-being is paramount, and it’s okay to put content creation on hold to ensure your safety. Let’s continue exploring the world, but let’s do it with caution and a strong focus on personal security. Safe travels, my friends!

Sierra Nevada Snow 2021 (S. Rose, 2021)

Sierra Nevada Mountains

I longed for freedom and fresh air. It was the morning after Christmas and the clouds danced in between the mountains of California as though they had music we could not hear. “I must see snow today,” I thought at my first sight of the sky. It rained more in the past week than I can remember all year. The mountains sparkled different shades of white in the early morning and the mountains are only a few hours away.

A Few Hours Later…

After hours of post-Christmas window shopping, I could not head straight home. The hills just above my route glistened in green, shades of dark gray, and just the beginning touches of gold. Thoughts turned to actions and I found myself driving up towards the Sierra Nevadas of California.

Heading through the low hills, vehicles covered in snow occasionally pass in the opposite direction, teasing sweet freshness ahead. I’m not sure how far I’d have to drive to experience more than snow on the side of the highway, but I wasn’t stopping until I got there. Before seeing more outside of California, it was never odd to me how many different types of weather and land we have here. I have a new appreciation for my home.

4,000 ft. above sea level

Cars line the side of the road, and filled the small parking lot. The lowest spot on the trail packed with snow and recently melted road ice still sat in puddles on the pavement. My heart yearned for the tallest peaks, “Soon,” I say to myself. Getting out of my car, the energy for a random snowball fight bubbles to the surface.

The impromptu trip meant I was wearing high-heeled boots, on an icy road. Never one to avoid the possibility of falling in dirt, “Muddy slush stains will be photography memories,” and I turn on my video camera hoping to catch a fall on film. No falling-fail-video this time, though, sorry to disappoint!

Snow Runoff

Do you think I am a little over-the-moon when it comes to water? A fish in a desert would feel the same. More on how important snow runoff is to California here. However, these peaceful photos are already changed! Just hours after my drive, a storm was scheduled to hit, leaving California with record snowfall. Learn more of the recent weather chaos here. We currently have 161% more snow than average (LATimes.com, 2021), the snowiest December on record (UC Berkley, 2021)!

A Pirate Life For Me

As I step into the tepid evening air in front of the New Orleans Sheraton Hotel, I feel so much moisture. Wall sconces entrancing my brain, making me think of pirate life, taverns, and history. The French Quarter, or “Old Square”, is located on the banks Mississippi River. Welcome to New Orleans, established by the French in 1718. Check out my first reactions in the video below!

“Blue Dog Piano” by George Rodrigue

Who dared paint a piano? A baby grand, at that? Judgment pierced through my inner musician as I walked through the swirling doors of the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel. Mesmerized, I walked straight to the Steinway masterpiece, luggage still in hand. This piano “BLUE” me away! The closer I got, the more curious I became. To learn more on the history of the piano or how the Blue Dog art was inspired, check Wendy Rodrigue’s article Blue Dog: In The Beginning!

The French Quarter

Both Spanish and French influence is found on every corner in The French Quarter! Some of the Spanish Calle tiles (see photos below), are over a century old! According to history, a special font was used to create the street tiles found in New Orleans. Much of the French influence was lost in the Great Fires of 1788 and 1794 and the Spanish-Collonial style took over in its place.

Hotel Monteleone

One of the most beautiful buildings I saw during my short stay in Lousiana was the historical landmark, the Hotel Monteleone. Steeped in family tradition, this hotel passed through five generations of Monteleone’s to become what it is today! So many distinguished authors stayed at this hotel, that it was named “official literary landmark by the Friends of the Library Association. [Two other hotels in] New York are the only other hotels in the United States that share this honor,” (HotelMonteleone.com, 2021).

Regardless of how fun and hectic life can get, when it is time to recenter, I visit a favorite spot in nature! Let us celebrate together and join me as I share with you this SPECIAL Blog Post, A Quaint Place to Getaway, Three Rivers!

What to Expect

A recent trip of mine was to Three Rivers, California. As a small, tucked-away town, many locals don’t know it exists. It sits right at the entrance to the Sequoia National Park and is a place I had to visit before seeing more of California on the production, “16 States in 16 Days,” (more on that on my next #TravelTuesdays Post!). I had such a blast visiting this hidden treasure of a town. Here are my favorite parts of the area, some directions, and a guide to local history!

A Utopian History

Three Rivers, a small town nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, has been charming guests since 1886. This is when a group of settlers founded a commune in the area based on the principles of social equality and economic fairness. Every individual participated in creating and sharing public goods; this cooperation helped the community thrive! However, when Congress founded the Sequoia National Park in 1890, the utopian settlement was absorbed by the community surrounding it to join into one town — Three Rivers. This history of acceptance and equality is a source of pride for its modern-day residents, and the hard work of the original community is still highlighted by the stunning memorials displayed across town.

Getting to Three Rivers

California Highway 198 will take you straight into Three Rivers. Several major cities have direct access to 198. As you get closer to Three Rivers, you’ll pass some other small mountain towns, each with hidden gems of their own. If you stop at any on your way, be sure to share your findings in the comments!

Hiking Trails Galore

Between the national parks and mountain ranges, Three Rivers has some of the most breathtaking nature I’ve seen. Luckily, there are dozens of hiking trails to explore in the area. I had such a great time venturing outdoors and hiking — I even got a firsthand look at one of the rivers! Make sure to strap on some appropriate hiking boots and go hit the trails.

The trails inside the Sequoia National Park are friendly for beginning hikers and take you through the stunning sequoia forests. A few paths will also take you along the shorelines of the local rivers. The park is a testament to the beauty and diversity of nature. It’s definitely worth stopping in to hike here.

Another option is the Skyline Loop. This is a popular trail with locals, and it’s easy to see why. Salt Creek Falls, a waterfall system, is right along the path! It’s a serene scene and something I would encourage every visitor to go check out. If you want to stay away from the parks while still taking in California nature, this trail is perfect.

Must-See Local Stops

One of the best parts of visiting Three Rivers was getting to see the shops and museums in town. These three visits are essential stops when you’re in the area.

Reimer’s Candies & Gifts shop was such a fun visit. After selling homemade chocolates and sweets for 50 years, trust me, they have perfected the craft. Reimer’s offers over 80 different kinds of chocolates, and every treat I tried was to die for. They also have super creative and delicious fudge flavors. Their creations come in all different assortments and sizes. I absolutely loved getting to try these local sweets!

My absolute favorite stop was Three Rivers Village Antiques. This quaint shop was full to the brim with local antiques and goods. Western Americana is on display throughout the store, with collections of artifacts from Western settlers, cowboys, and Native American tribes. I had an awesome time looking through all of the old jewelry, photographs, and goods they’ve collected. It’s definitely a must-see when you’re in town!

Another cute place in town was the Three Rivers Historical Museum. They had exhibits showing off the tale of the town’s founding all the way to modern times. Several renovations are planned to add even more interactive galleries for guests to see. I encourage everyone to see what it has in store. There are also several local restaurants to refresh yourself in between hikes or before heading home, each with amazing views of the river! See below for one such view from one of my top spots, River View Bar & Grill.

Get out today to go see Three Rivers! Please share your favorite parts of your trip, including other small towns you find, in the comments below.
