When the Ocean Pulls Back: Experiencing Santa Cruz’s King Tide Low at Pleasure Point || ThereGoesSaraRose.com

On King Tide day, Pleasure Point revealed an entirely different coastline — starfish, anemones, and tide pools glowing in the late-day sun. By dusk, the neighborhood lit up with surfers, walkers, and Christmas lights, and the moon rose over the exposed reef like a spotlight on the ocean’s quietest magic. Low tide on December 4th arrived at 3:48 p.m., just sixteen minutes before we pulled into Pleasure Point at 4:04 — that perfect sliver of time when the ocean has already retreated to its widest breath, revealing everything it’s willing to show.

It is King Tide week in Santa Cruz — meaning the morning of the day I went high tide reached 7.0 feet, one of the highest tides of the season. King Tides don’t always create the lowest lows, but they do create an exaggerated tidal range. And today, that range was enough to pull the waterline far back from the cliffs, exposing tide pools, seagrass beds, and creatures normally hidden beneath winter surf.

What I didn’t expect was how much the journey there would set the tone for the rainbow reveal.

Arriving at Low Tide: The Reveal Begins

The moment we stepped onto the stairs leading down to Pleasure Point, the late-day sun was spilling gold across the rocks.

The ocean had pulled back enough to uncover what felt like a forest of seagrass — long, wet ribbons glistening in the light, moving in slow breath with the last remaining wash of waves. The low tide wasn’t the lowest of the week, but because of the King Tide range, it opened the coast wide enough to walk among ecosystems usually hidden underwater.

Everywhere I looked, there were small worlds unfolding.

The Tide Pools: Worlds Within Worlds

I didn’t find the sea slugs I was hoping for — but the ocean offered other treasures.

There was the giant sea star, startling in size and color, resting in a clear tide pool as if it had been placed there intentionally.

Around it, sea anemones were everywhere — some open and waving gently, others closed tight with sand clinging to their bodies like chocolate chips on a cookie.

The rocks and seaweed mix were an array of artwork — eroded, honeycombed, carved by time and tides into textures that looked almost intentional with living color and curves for contrast.

Every direction held something new: scallop shells embedded in algae, tiny snails tucked into crevices, red and green seaweeds glowing in the low sun.

It felt less like exploring a beach and more like walking across the seafloor — as if the ocean had quietly stepped aside to let us wander through its private rooms.

Sunset at Low Tide: The Soft Closure to the Day

As the sun lowered, it gilded every pool and rock ridge in amber.

The tide began a slow return, inch by inch, filling the seams and channels we had just walked through. People lingered on the rocks, silhouettes softened by the orange sky, all of us caught in that tender moment before daylight folds away but the adventure has not yet ended.

Evening at Pleasure Point: When the Tide Drops and the Neighborhood Wakes Up

As the sun slipped below the horizon, Pleasure Point shifted into an entirely different personality — softer, slower, and somehow even more magical. The tide pools were still exposed, glossy with seawater and moonlight, but now the bluff trail filled with people emerging from their homes for their evening walk. In the fading gold-and-indigo light, surfers still paddled out, tide pool adventurers adorned headlamps and flashlights silhouetted against the shimmering path the full moon laid across the water. That reflection stretched all the way toward Capitola, turning the low-tide reefs into a silver mirror.

Walking the trail after dark felt like joining a quiet local ritual. Families strolled with dogs, couples paused at the railings to watch the surf, and the neighborhood homes began to glow one by one. Some were trimmed with twinkling Christmas lights, others displayed vintage holiday décor in their windows. Even the houses themselves, with their mid-century angles and warm interior light, seemed to reflect the sunset they had just absorbed.

And then, as the sky deepened to navy blue, Pleasure Point delivered one last surprise: the moon rising bright and bold behind the windswept cypress trees. Its light poured over the ocean and onto the cliffside path, revealing just how alive the coastline remains long after the tide has reached its lowest point. This is the part of the day most visitors never see — the moment when the ocean quiets, and the community comes out to savor it.

It was quiet. It was beautiful. And it felt like a reminder:

Revelation doesn’t always come from the dramatic high points — sometimes it comes when something finally pulls back far enough for you to see what’s been there all along. Have you ever explored a coastline at low tide — or caught a King Tide in action? I’d love to hear what you discovered, saw, or felt. Exploring Culinary Delights at The Fort Sutter Hotel: The Four Palms and Cafe Bernardo in Sacramento, CA

Hello, lovely readers of ThereGoesSaraRose.com!

I hope you’ve all been enjoying our recent deep dive into the charming Fort Sutter Hotel. Nestled in the heart of Midtown Sacramento, this boutique gem has truly captivated our hearts with its unique blend of artistic charm and modern elegance. Today, I’m thrilled to take you on a culinary journey through the hotel’s two exceptional dining options: The Four Palms and Cafe Bernardo. Whether you’re staying at the hotel or just passing through, these eateries promise an unforgettable gastronomic experience.

The Four Palms: A Gourmet Oasis

First up, let’s talk about The Four Palms, the hotel’s signature restaurant. As you step into this sophisticated space, you’re immediately enveloped in a warm, inviting atmosphere. I really appreciated the comfortable bar seating! The decor is a harmonious blend of contemporary chic and subtle nods to Sacramento’s rich art culture. Think plush seating, elegant lighting, and tasteful art pieces that set the stage for a memorable dining experience [1].

The Menu: A Symphony of Flavors

The Four Palms prides itself on offering a menu that showcases the best of California cuisine with a gourmet twist. The chefs here are dedicated to using locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients, ensuring that every dish bursts with fresh, vibrant flavors [2]. This is not to speak ill of other restaurants, but if you were ever worried about the quality of the food dipping right before close – this is not one of those places!

For starters, you can’t go wrong with their Crispy Cauliflower, Three Street Tacos and Seasonal (Prosciutto) Pizza [3]. I’m a sucker for mushrooms so I also tried their Mushroom & Jarlsberg Cheese Salad! Everything was absolutely amazing and cooked to perfection. The cauliflower took the crown only because I’m still trying to figure out how they got it so tasty and crispy!

Perfect Pairings

No sophisticated meal is complete without the perfect drink to accompany it. The Four Palms boasts an impressive wine list, featuring selections from some of California’s finest vineyards. Whether you’re a fan of robust reds or crisp whites, the knowledgeable staff can help you find the ideal pairing for your meal. Additionally, their craft cocktail menu is not to be missed – the Sazerac, with its refreshing blend of rye whisky, sugar, bitters and absinthe, is a personal favorite [4]. After the Second Saturday Art Walk (blog post coming soon!), I believe I walked close to two miles so I was ready for something a little stronger!

Cafe Bernardo: Casual Comfort

Next, we venture to Cafe Bernardo, the quintessential spot for those seeking a more laid-back dining experience without compromising on quality. This beloved local chain has become a staple in Sacramento’s dining scene, and its Fort Sutter location certainly lives up to the hype [5]. As I arrived on a holiday weekend and wanted to miss the crowds, I arrived when the restaurant opened and watched the staff busy with their tasks and families bustle in. This experience reminded me so much of sitting eating beignets in New Orleans that I sighed in happiness before the food even arrived. But it wasn’t just the food, it was the hospitality….I felt welcome.

The Atmosphere: Relaxed and Inviting

Cafe Bernardo exudes a casual, welcoming vibe that makes it the perfect place for a leisurely brunch, a quick lunch, or a cozy dinner. The interior is bright and airy, with plenty of natural light streaming in through large windows. It’s the kind of place where you can relax with a good book, catch up with friends, or enjoy a solo meal while people-watching [6].

All-Day Dining

My Order of Chilaquiles, Cafe Bernardo (The Fort Sutter). Sara Rose, ©2024.

One of the best things about Cafe Bernardo is its all-day dining concept, which means you can enjoy their delicious offerings from morning till night. Breakfast lovers will swoon over the Chilaquiles, a made-from-scratch dish featuring eggs, chorizo, cotija cheese, cilantro and salsa verde all atop crispy tortilla chips. For dessert or on the go, try from their array of baked goods! [7].

If you’re stopping by for dinner, I’ve been told the Roasted Chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables is comfort food at its finest. And then don’t forget to save room for dessert – their Bread Pudding with bourbon caramel sauce is the perfect sweet ending to any meal [8].

Sipping in Style

Cafe Bernardo also offers a delightful selection of beverages, from freshly brewed coffees and teas to refreshing house-made sodas. For those who enjoy a tipple, their beer and wine list features local favorites as well as classic choices that pair beautifully with their menu [9]. However, one of the nicest things was to just have my own refreshing large bottle of water after such a hot weekend! (Check out my blog post coming soon, Second Saturday Art Walk!)

Comments from Cafe Bernardo

As the chilaquiles were some of the best I’d ever had (and I order them everywhere I go), I had to ask the chef about the food!

Everything is from scratch. We do buy the best! And from locally owned farms; We current support Produce Express for all produce while meats are from Niman Ranch farms.

We also have Special Menus for the holidays, like on St. Patricks day we had Corn Hash meals. The menu changes with the seasons, too! Come back again!

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re in the mood for an upscale dining experience or a casual bite, The Fort Sutter Hotel has you covered with The Four Palms and Cafe Bernardo. Each offers a unique atmosphere and a delectable menu that promises to satisfy every palate.

So, next time you find yourself in Midtown Sacramento, make sure to carve out some time to visit these fantastic eateries. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!

Until next time, happy dining!

As a Travel, Food and Art blog, featuring the Fort Sutter Hotel Sacramento, Tapestry Collection* was a must as it combines all three worlds! Nestled in Sacramento’s vibrant cityscape, this hotel offers a unique blend of relaxation, rejuvenation, and art appreciation during my stay for the city’s Second Saturday Art Walk. Join me as I delve into the hotel’s serene ambiance, conscientious design, and their impeccable service.

What Stood Out

Front desk staff greeted me like an old acquaintance upon my arrival. Although I wanted to arrived earlier in the day (see my trip to Sacramento at Traveling with Amtrak || ThereGoesSaraRose.com), I strolled in after a hot afternoon to meet the evening crew. However, unlike hotels I’ve visited before, the air-of-too-busy-importance filled with phone calls and radio checks was nowhere to be found. The calm, open atmosphere called for me to relax. This new age hospitality is stress relieving. Mere blocks from the last stop in the Second Saturday Art Walk, VIP Guided Tour, there couldn’t not have been a better spot to stay.

As the elevator drops me off on my floor, I notice something immediately different, it’s quiet. But, what is it? Signs lead me to my room and, as my feet lead me there, it hits me. The floor has an extra layer of soft, rubbery cushion, reminding me of modern playgrounds. Perfect for the extra weight of luggage and those anxious to get to their rooms. I consider running to test the theory but I’m already pleasantly exhausted for the evening, and I still have to get ready to go eat!

The Morning After

Opening the door to my suite, a hallway separates the door from the rest of the living space, giving a true sense of privacy (Tour on YouTube out soon!) Turning the corner, the TV is on and it says, “Welcome, Sara!” on the screen. Whoa, trippy. I continue my exploration, but the separate bedroom was even quieter. After my stay here, I remember thinking, “Is there extra soundproofing in this room?” because I literally heard nothing at night. I freshen up and out of the room to finish my evening at The Four Palms (check out my restaurant review, here)!

Leaving a hotel is typically one of two experiences, either a walk of shame or, at best, an awkward necessary transaction before your exodus. Awake at sunrise with a check-out of 11:00 AM and the train not leaving until noon, it hits me that this hotel stay is neither of those previous experiences. This is something new. I was hesitant to pack up and found myself ready to lounge, something typically hard for me to do. Salts on the bath and sore feet called for me to chill out…enjoy myself. I laugh to myself and decide to do just that.

To be very honest, I went the weekend of Mother’s Day, the first without my mom in this world. It was necessary to plan something special, but I knew I would also feel guilty to out and about so I planning to indulge in something we might have done together seemed like the best of both worlds. In different ways, (as you will see in the next few articles, too!) this experience healed something for me. Thank you, Hilton!

The Artistic Fort Sutter Hotel

Fort Sutter Hotel, a part of the Hilton Tapestry Collection, is an architectural gem that speaks volumes about Sacramento’s history. The hotel is named after the historic Sutter’s Fort, a 19th-century agricultural and trade colony in the Mexican Alta California province [1], just down the block. While the hotel itself, according to Hilton’s official website, is a relatively recent addition to Sacramento’s landscape, it has been meticulously designed to reflect the city’s rich history and charm [2].

Unique Features That Set It Apart

One of the most striking features of Fort Sutter Hotel is its nod to Sacramento’s history. Although the Hotel has no affiliation with Fort Sutter the hotel’s design embraces a contemporary aesthetic while still paying homage to the city’s cultural heritage, creating a unique ambiance that is both modern and timeless. The hotel’s art collection, curated to represent the local art scene, further enhances this feeling of being deeply connected to Sacramento’s cultural pulse. Little nuances, like mini canvas key cards and original art pieces in your room is part of the experience at Fort Sutter Hotel.

Perfectly Positioned for the Second Saturday Art Walk

Fort Sutter Hotel’s central location was ideal for immersing myself in Sacramento’s renowned Second Saturday Art Walk. This monthly event, as detailed by Visit Sacramento, showcases the city’s vibrant art scene, with local galleries and studios opening their doors to the public [3]. After a fulfilling day of artistic exploration, the hotel served as a tranquil retreat, providing much-needed relaxation and comfort.

Comfortable, beautiful, and easy? Salt bath soak, firm-yet-fluffy mattress and tap-to-unlock doors, this stay regenerated my soul as if designed to do so from the ground floor up. I’m always worried about losing my keys or documents so the Hilton Honors app made checking in and out even easier! It was nice to just be able to say, “Good bye!” as I walk out restored.

A Message From Fort Sutter Hotel!

“A lot of our guests are interested in the Second Saturday events through the Midtown Association on Instagram: @exploremidtown. We host 2 art pop’s a year, one is the July and the other is in October during the 2 nd Saturday event. There are a ton of concerts held downtown and some great festivals coming up in October!” – General Manager, Fort Sutter Hotel.

Check out my experience taking the Second Saturday Art Walk, VIP Tour at ThereGoesSaraRose.com, new blog coming out soon!

Conclusion

To summarize, my stay at Fort Sutter Hotel was a delightful blend of local culture, art appreciation, and relaxation. The hotel’s commitment to showcasing Sacramento’s artists, coupled with its modern amenities and exceptional service, made my experience truly memorable. If you’re planning a trip to Sacramento, I highly recommend adding Fort Sutter Hotel to your itinerary. Until next time, safe travels, fellow wanderers!
