2025 Wrap-Up in Full Color || ThereGoesSaraRose.com

2025 was a year of quiet growth for There Goes Sara Rose. This wrap-up reflects on global readership, the most-read travel stories, and a creative shift toward observation, design, and alignment — including a look at what’s coming next with Color Persists: Volume 1.

2025 Wrap-Up: Quiet Growth, Real Momentum

Somewhere along the way, this little corner of the internet stopped being just mine and started becoming ours. In 2025, readers found their way here from all over — across the U.S., the UK, Canada, Europe, and even as far as Singapore and Hong Kong — often through posts written years ago that somehow kept traveling. That’s because you kept reading, sharing, wandering, and coming back. For the first time since this site began, it feels right to say this has grown into an international community — built slowly, organically, and entirely because of you.

These were the most-read blog posts in 2025:

Thank you for being here — for reading, sharing, and carrying these stories with you. Every visit, every quiet moment spent exploring a post, is what allowed this space to grow at its own pace. I’m grateful you’re part of this journey, and I can’t wait to see where we wander next.

2025: The Reframe

This year was about alignment. I moved to a new city I love, worked through graduate school, made new friendships, and developed a clearer understanding of how creativity fits into my life. Travel remained part of my world, but it shifted into something more observational — something I returned to when it felt healthy and meaningful rather than obligatory.

The posts I shared this year — about Point Lobos, Monterey, Santa Cruz tides, Sacramento food walks, and art spaces — reflected where I was in real time. They weren’t meant to be guides or itineraries; they documented place, presence, and attention as I experienced them.

Much of the work this year happened quietly and off the blog: graduate school and thesis development, therapy and long (sometimes difficult) conversations with friends, starting a research study and documenting that process at IDFieldGuide.com, developing my professional design portfolio, and writing Color Persists: Volume 1, to be released in January 2026. That clarity changed how I create and allowed this blog to function as a living archive rather than a performance schedule — exactly how I want it to exist.

Where Travel Meets Design

Travel matters to me as a designer because it expands how I see. For the past five years, alongside everything shared on this site, I’ve been photographing flowers and plants everywhere I go. These photographs were never meant to be souvenirs; they’ve always been references. I use them the same way artists have always used nature: to study color, contrast, texture, and light.

Over time, that practice became a personal design library, something I returned to again and again in my work. This year, I decided to make that library accessible to you.

What I’m Releasing: COLOR PERSISTS

As 2025 comes to a close, I’m excited to announce I have finished production on COLOR PERSISTS: Volume 1, based on a collection of photography that has grown quietly alongside this site. It will be available globally in January 2026.

The book is built on how I actually work as a designer. Over the past five years, I’ve photographed flowers and plants during my travels and used those images as ongoing design references. This book offers a curated version of that same library. Below is a small preview of Color Persists: Volume 1 – including the cover, note to readers, an example of the colors in this book, and about the author pages.

  • Screenshot

It includes 75 close-up photographs, each paired with five hex codes pulled directly from the image, for a total of 375 color references grounded in real environments. Think of it as a digital paint book, a working palette built from observation rather than trends. The focus is intentionally up close. Instead of documenting where I went, the book documents what I noticed: color, texture, and detail. In that way, it functions as both a micro travel record and a practical design resource.

The book will be available as a softcover 5×5, printed on high-quality luster paper and designed to be used as a reference tool rather than decoration. This is Volume 1, a snapshot of the last five years. The goal is for each year to eventually have its own volume of color to choose from, but this one stands on its own.

I’ll update this post with the link when the book is available to the public. Happy New Years Eve!

Balboa Park, Soundchecks, and the Art of Being Present || ThereGoesSaraRose.com

A quiet moment in Balboa Park became one of the memories that shaped my “in-between year.” From soundchecks drifting through arches to gardens layered with history, this post explores presence, creativity, and what this San Diego landmark taught me about designing a meaningful life.

TRAVEL. FOOD. DESIGN. ThereGoesSaraRose.com

It was late August 2024 when I found myself wandering through Balboa Park — one of those aimless, golden-hour afternoons that happen when your plane doesn’t leave for several more hours and your brain finally gets permission to breathe.

The sun was sliding behind the Botanical Building, casting a soft glow across a lily-covered pool. Somewhere beyond the plaza, a soundcheck drifted through the arches — The Doors, then Pink Floyd, echoing from the Spreckels Organ Pavilion like a memory waking up. It wasn’t loud, it wasn’t a performance. It was just enough to stop me mid-step.

I didn’t go to Balboa Park with intention, or an itinerary, or even the thought that this moment would matter. But looking back now — over a year later, after finding peace in quiet truths — I realize this was one of the moments that stayed with me. A memory from the “in-between year” that knew it belonged to a future version of myself.

Because the best travel moments don’t announce themselves.
They find you.
They ask you to be still.

Exploring Balboa Park

For those who haven’t wandered its pathways yet, Balboa Park is San Diego’s 1,200-acre cultural heart — a sprawling network of gardens, trails, museums, historic architecture, and performance spaces just north of downtown. Home to 18 museums, the San Diego Zoo, the Starlight Bowl Amphitheater, miles of walkable promenades, and more than a dozen curated gardens, the park is designed for slow exploration. You can browse world-class art, watch a rehearsal drift from an open-air stage, grab something delicious from The Prado, or simply follow whatever path the day hands you. If you want to plan your own visit, the official park website offers maps, current exhibits, and accessibility details: balboapark.org.

Layers Upon Layers

Even in 2024, when I wasn’t posting much, the park felt like a reminder of how much a single place can hold. Balboa Park hums with layers. Spanish Colonial façades wrap around art galleries. Desert gardens unfold near koi ponds. Palm trees brush the sky beside Moorish columns. It’s not one story; it’s dozens of them stacked and shifting as you walk. Free art museums sit unassuming yet host paintings I’d only ever seen before in history books.

Those few hours, I drifted through all of it, just soaking in the atmosphere. I wandered the Prado walkways and explored the botanical gardens. I enjoyed the sun-warmed alcoves between the San Diego Museum of Art and the Mingei. There was art everywhere — much of it protected, all of it deserving to be seen in person. Screens flatten what the world intends to be dimensional.

And maybe that’s why this moment returns to me now.
Because presence — real, grounded, unforced presence — is becoming the center of everything I create. Some things can be shared, the importance the history – but to be changed one must experience it for themselves. I can only relay how these places in California have changed me. You must decide to get up and be changed yourself.

The Quiet Year

I wrote in my Point Lobos post about the quiet season I stepped into. It included graduate school, new work, and new rhythms. There were also inner shifts that don’t happen on a public timeline. That year wasn’t loud, but it was formative.

Travel has always been how I process the world and myself. But in 2024, something shifted. I began thinking not just about experiencing moments like this. I also considered designing experiences that help others learn. These experiences help others reflect and explore.

That’s what led me deeper into instructional design.
That’s what led me to graduate school.
And ultimately, that’s what led me to begin writing a book.

Building Something New

For the last year, I’ve been deep in a Master’s program in Instructional Science & Technology — work that’s reshaped how I see places like Balboa Park. Travel isn’t just movement; it’s experiential learning. It’s design in the wild. And the more I studied how people learn, the more I wanted to help others create experiences that feel just as intentional and human.

That’s why I’m writing The Instructional Designers’ Field Guide — a practical, research-informed handbook for anyone building courses, trainings, or online learning environments. Whether you arrived in this field on purpose or by accident (like so many of us do), this guide is meant to feel like a compass: clear, friendly, and grounded in real practice. It’s for the curious, the career-switchers, and the quietly ambitious creators who want their work to actually make a difference.

This guide is for you if you’re stepping into online learning, just like this blog is for you if you enjoy experiential learning, second-hand. It is also for those entering course development, accessibility, or training design. This is especially true if you come from a nontraditional path. It’s built for the curious, the quietly ambitious, the people who want to create meaningful learning experiences that feel human.

And it turns out that travel, food, and design all belong in the same story:

  • Travel is experiential learning.
  • Food is sensory storytelling.
  • Design is how we shape the way others move through knowledge, places, and moments.

Balboa Park reminded me that those threads were always connected.

As a Travel, Food and Art blog, featuring the Fort Sutter Hotel Sacramento, Tapestry Collection* was a must as it combines all three worlds! Nestled in Sacramento’s vibrant cityscape, this hotel offers a unique blend of relaxation, rejuvenation, and art appreciation during my stay for the city’s Second Saturday Art Walk. Join me as I delve into the hotel’s serene ambiance, conscientious design, and their impeccable service.

What Stood Out

Front desk staff greeted me like an old acquaintance upon my arrival. Although I wanted to arrived earlier in the day (see my trip to Sacramento at Traveling with Amtrak || ThereGoesSaraRose.com), I strolled in after a hot afternoon to meet the evening crew. However, unlike hotels I’ve visited before, the air-of-too-busy-importance filled with phone calls and radio checks was nowhere to be found. The calm, open atmosphere called for me to relax. This new age hospitality is stress relieving. Mere blocks from the last stop in the Second Saturday Art Walk, VIP Guided Tour, there couldn’t not have been a better spot to stay.

As the elevator drops me off on my floor, I notice something immediately different, it’s quiet. But, what is it? Signs lead me to my room and, as my feet lead me there, it hits me. The floor has an extra layer of soft, rubbery cushion, reminding me of modern playgrounds. Perfect for the extra weight of luggage and those anxious to get to their rooms. I consider running to test the theory but I’m already pleasantly exhausted for the evening, and I still have to get ready to go eat!

The Morning After

Opening the door to my suite, a hallway separates the door from the rest of the living space, giving a true sense of privacy (Tour on YouTube out soon!) Turning the corner, the TV is on and it says, “Welcome, Sara!” on the screen. Whoa, trippy. I continue my exploration, but the separate bedroom was even quieter. After my stay here, I remember thinking, “Is there extra soundproofing in this room?” because I literally heard nothing at night. I freshen up and out of the room to finish my evening at The Four Palms (check out my restaurant review, here)!

Leaving a hotel is typically one of two experiences, either a walk of shame or, at best, an awkward necessary transaction before your exodus. Awake at sunrise with a check-out of 11:00 AM and the train not leaving until noon, it hits me that this hotel stay is neither of those previous experiences. This is something new. I was hesitant to pack up and found myself ready to lounge, something typically hard for me to do. Salts on the bath and sore feet called for me to chill out…enjoy myself. I laugh to myself and decide to do just that.

To be very honest, I went the weekend of Mother’s Day, the first without my mom in this world. It was necessary to plan something special, but I knew I would also feel guilty to out and about so I planning to indulge in something we might have done together seemed like the best of both worlds. In different ways, (as you will see in the next few articles, too!) this experience healed something for me. Thank you, Hilton!

The Artistic Fort Sutter Hotel

Fort Sutter Hotel Entrance, Street Side. Sara Rose ©2024.

Fort Sutter Hotel, a part of the Hilton Tapestry Collection, is an architectural gem that speaks volumes about Sacramento’s history. The hotel is named after the historic Sutter’s Fort, a 19th-century agricultural and trade colony in the Mexican Alta California province [1], just down the block. While the hotel itself, according to Hilton’s official website, is a relatively recent addition to Sacramento’s landscape, it has been meticulously designed to reflect the city’s rich history and charm [2].

Unique Features That Set It Apart

One of the most striking features of Fort Sutter Hotel is its nod to Sacramento’s history. Although the Hotel has no affiliation with Fort Sutter the hotel’s design embraces a contemporary aesthetic while still paying homage to the city’s cultural heritage, creating a unique ambiance that is both modern and timeless. The hotel’s art collection, curated to represent the local art scene, further enhances this feeling of being deeply connected to Sacramento’s cultural pulse. Little nuances, like mini canvas key cards and original art pieces in your room is part of the experience at Fort Sutter Hotel.

Perfectly Positioned for the Second Saturday Art Walk

Fort Sutter Hotel’s central location was ideal for immersing myself in Sacramento’s renowned Second Saturday Art Walk. This monthly event, as detailed by Visit Sacramento, showcases the city’s vibrant art scene, with local galleries and studios opening their doors to the public [3]. After a fulfilling day of artistic exploration, the hotel served as a tranquil retreat, providing much-needed relaxation and comfort.

Comfortable, beautiful, and easy? Salt bath soak, firm-yet-fluffy mattress and tap-to-unlock doors, this stay regenerated my soul as if designed to do so from the ground floor up. I’m always worried about losing my keys or documents so the Hilton Honors app made checking in and out even easier! It was nice to just be able to say, “Good bye!” as I walk out restored.

A Message From Fort Sutter Hotel!

“A lot of our guests are interested in the Second Saturday events through the Midtown Association on Instagram: @exploremidtown. We host 2 art pop’s a year, one is the July and the other is in October during the 2 nd Saturday event. There are a ton of concerts held downtown and some great festivals coming up in October!” – General Manager, Fort Sutter Hotel.

Check out my experience taking the Second Saturday Art Walk, VIP Tour at ThereGoesSaraRose.com, new blog coming out soon!

Conclusion

To summarize, my stay at Fort Sutter Hotel was a delightful blend of local culture, art appreciation, and relaxation. The hotel’s commitment to showcasing Sacramento’s artists, coupled with its modern amenities and exceptional service, made my experience truly memorable. If you’re planning a trip to Sacramento, I highly recommend adding Fort Sutter Hotel to your itinerary. Until next time, safe travels, fellow wanderers!

As my life expanded into a beautiful realm of traveling for work…it also includes a once-a-week visit to California’s capitol, Sacramento, California! Combining travel & food, let me share an exciting new flavor experience with you and who inspired it!

A “Dirty Chai” from Old Soul Co.! (S. Rose, 2023)

The people I work with are each a shining star and inspirations in their own right. They not only introduced me to a wholesome coffee shop, but also one of the most amazing and diverse first weeks on the job! These individuals aren’t just working, it is evident they care and support each other as a way of being. I’m starting to notice this is a reoccurring theme amongst Sacramentans! This article is dedicated to the “Old Souls” I’ve met this past week as we embark on a journey through time and flavor and the story of Old Soul Co., a newfound haven for exceptional coffee and food in Sacramento!

Old Soul Co. Sacramento, CA (S. Rose, 2023)
How It Began

In 2002, the roots of Old Soul Co. were planted in a shared passion for cafe culture, coffee roasting, and baking. Fast forward to 2006, where the dream materialized in the form of a renovated warehouse in Midtown Sacramento. Tim and Jason, fueled by family support and unwavering dedication, transformed an obscure alley into the beating heart of farm-fresh dishes.

Old Soul Co. Sacramento, CA. (S. Rose, 2023)

The origins were humble, with $2 cash payments in a jar under the “honor system.” As the aroma of freshly baked pastries and rich coffee wafted through the air, the community clamored for retail offerings, pushing Tim and Jason out of their comfort zone and birthing The Alley – Sacramento’s first farm-to-table cafe.

Today, Old Soul Co. thrives in its original location, a testament to its loyal customers and committed coffee producers. With three additional cafes, an expanded menu, and a network of partners, Old Soul Co. has become a cherished part of Sacramento’s culinary landscape.

Old Soul Co. signage. (S. Rose, 2023)

What sets Old Soul Co. apart is its commitment to storytelling. For sixteen years, they’ve celebrated the unsung heroes – farmers and artisans worldwide – by providing a platform for their hard work and artistry. The menu boasts fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, a testament to enduring partnerships built on dedication, passion, and a shared excitement for life. And trust, it smells amazing every time I’ve visited!

The Old Soul Co. “team” is more than just a group of employees; it’s a family working around the clock to craft exceptional experiences. From bakers burning the midnight oil to baristas creating the perfect cup, each member contributes to the success of this unique business model.

A Local-Artist supporter! Old Soul Co. (S. Rose, 2023)

But it doesn’t stop there. Old Soul Co. extends its family to producer partners, picker patio workers, and mill workers, recognizing their vital role in the journey from bean to cup. In 2020, the entire staff earned the title of “Old Souls,” a fitting tribute to their resilience and dedication during challenging times.

As Old Soul Co. reflects on its journey from zero employees to four retail locations, 50+ team members, and high-end wholesale partnerships, there’s a shared belief that the best is yet to come. So, if you’re seeking more than just coffee – if you’re in search of a community-driven, artisanal experience – Old Soul Co. awaits, ready to share its rich tapestry of flavors and stories with each sip and bite. California’s Changing Natural Disaster Landscape: A Traveler’s Guide || ThereGoesSaraRose.com

I have exciting news while giving space to discuss why California’s Disaster Preparedness is crucial! Check out what NEW adventure is in store at ThereGoesSaraRose.com!

TRAVEL. CAPTURE. CREATE. ThereGoesSaraRose.com

If you read last week’s article, you may be saying, “This isn’t the Disneyland post we were promised- WHY?!” Dear travel enthusiasts, I am excited to share news; I am now an instructor assigned to disaster-affected areas of California. If you have followed my journey, you are already aware how we include information on safety and the natural disasters that can happen in the USA. My upcoming vocational role will support me AND also provide me with a unique perspective as I travel, research and explore California’s diverse natural environment. As I continue my personal travels, I’m eager to share with you a unique understanding of the ever-evolving natural disaster landscape of the Golden State and how we personally recovery after these events.

Over the past decade, California has witnessed significant changes in its natural disaster patterns. Understanding these shifts is vital for my travels, as they will shape my experiences and encounters, enriching the content I can bring to you. So, let’s dive into the fascinating world of California’s natural disasters, from earthquakes to wildfires, droughts to floods, and much more.

1. Earthquakes: A Constant Companion

First, let’s talk about earthquakes, a part of daily life in California due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. As I explore the state, it’s essential to understand earthquake preparedness to stay safe and ensure I can continue sharing my travel experiences with you. But earthquakes aren’t just about personal safety; they also offer unique insights into the resilience and innovation of Californians, thanks to advancements in earthquake early warning systems and seismic retrofitting. It is one thing to feel California’s random shakes versus a earthquake that causes damage.

2. Wildfires: The Fiery Challenge

The past decade has seen a significant surge in wildfires, affecting both the natural landscape and communities. It has been said the recent fire seasons are like nothing California has seen before. In my travels, I’ll be avoiding regions impacted by these fires for personal safety as required, but share how we can stay safe. These real-life stories will not only raise awareness but also emphasize the importance of fire management, prevention, and community resilience.

3. Prolonged Drought Conditions

California’s persistent droughts have left their mark on the state, shaping the landscapes I’ll explore. These arid conditions have affected agriculture, water resources, and ecosystems. Understanding the implications of drought will allow me to present a comprehensive view of California’s environment. Additionally, it’s important to highlight the need for water conservation and sustainable practices for myself but also to inspire change!

4. Floods and Mudslides: A Watery Aftermath

One interesting aspect of the evolving natural disaster landscape in California is the relationship between wildfires and heavy rainfall, leading to flash floods and mudslides. In the areas affected by wildfires, these natural disasters can have a profound impact. In just moments, an unexpected rainfall after a fire can combine to create a dangerous scene that can cause devastating results.

Graphic Image: Natural cataclysm disasters flood safeguard rescue boat service. Rescued saved people from flooded house vector illustration. Flood natural disaster rescuers. Water covering land, man on roof.

5. Landslides in Hilly Terrain

In California’s rugged terrain, the risk of landslides is a constant concern. As I travel through hilly areas, I’ll be cautious about the potential dangers of landslides, especially during seismic events and heavy rain. Entire highways have been washed away in moment and California is still rebuilding. By sharing these experiences with you, I hope to raise awareness about safety measures and preparedness in landslide-prone regions.

6. Tsunamis and Coastal Vulnerability

Exploring California’s coastline will be an exciting part of my travel journey. However, it’s vital to be aware of the tsunami risks that these regions face. I never thought this was something California would see in my lifetime, but I’ve already experienced being on my way to the coast when a Tsunami warning came through once. It can happen again.

Understanding the coastal communities’ early warning systems and evacuation plans is not only crucial for my safety but also for offering you valuable insights into disaster preparedness.

7. Coping with Extreme Heatwaves

Heatwaves are another facet of California’s natural disaster landscape. As I explore urban areas like Los Angeles and the Central Valley, I’ll encounter the challenges posed by extreme heat while actually visiting one of the hottest places on Earth in 2024, Death Valley. Documenting these experiences will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of how these events impact the local population, from health concerns to energy demands and wildfire risks.

8. Winter Storms and Mountain Communities

While winter storms are less frequent in California, they can have a significant impact on mountainous areas. As I take you to these regions, I’ll share my insights into the transportation disruptions and avalanche risks associated with heavy snowfall. Understanding these challenges will help you prepare for your own mountain adventures.

9. The Lesser-Known Volcanic Threat

California’s active volcanoes, such as Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak, are a fascinating aspect of the state’s geography. While volcanic eruptions are rare, understanding the monitoring and preparedness measures in place is essential. I’ll share this knowledge with you, making sure you’re well-informed about the potential risks and news from the area.

In conclusion, my journey through California will still be a travel adventure. But my understanding of the state’s evolving natural disaster landscape will be forever changed. This will change how I think, and how I write. I look forward to taking you along my thrilling adventures, providing you with valuable preparedness insights, raising awareness, and, most importantly, helping you get ready for your own future travels through this diverse and dynamic state.

As a self-proclaimed foodie, my visits to Disneyland in 2018 and 2019 became unforgettable culinary adventures and sharing my experiences only makes me want to go again! I’d visited Disneyland many times growing up but these visits were different. The first time you go to a favorite location as an adult is an entirely upgraded experience! In addition, I’d never realized there are so many things to do too, like the food events that take place through the year!

Top of California Screamin’, Disney’s California Adventure (S. Rose, 2018)

The food event I attended was held at various kiosks within Disney California Adventure. Take your ticket with food tabs and follow the tast-adventures to your hearts content! Disney’s California Adventure opened in 2001 and is a theme park located adjacent to Disneyland. It offers a unique and immersive experience that celebrates the diverse culture, history, and landmarks of California through thrilling attractions, live entertainment, and delicious dining options. When I say “Disneyland”, understand I visited both parks and stayed at Paradise Pier Hotel during my trip! I wished I taken more snaps of the food but I gobbled them up so fast (the Mickey-shaped Beef Wellimgton was my favorite!), we’ll just have to buy tickets to the next food event soon!!

Carthay Circle Restaurant, Disney California Adventure (S. Rose, 2018)

With several dining reservations and a dedicated focus on exploring the food scene, I immersed myself in the delectable delights that the resort had to offer. From iconic holiday snacks to themed restaurants, I still have yet to visit even half of the 128 food locations! Join me as I take you through my tasty journey, sharing my experiences and recommendations for making the most of your Disneyland visit when it comes to satisfying your taste buds. Get ready to embark on a mouthwatering exploration of the incredible food offerings at the happiest place on Earth!

Quick Tip: Don’t over-indulge if you have a sensitive stomach! I did at both Oga’s Cantina – Galaxy’s Edge and Cafe Orleans 🥴. I had to take an unplanned rest before continuing my adventure! Whoops!

The Magic of Lore-Inspired Food

Disneyland not only offers incredible food events but also brings the magic of its beloved stories to life through culinary creations. Imagine savoring the famous “Grey Stuff” from Beauty and the Beast, a delectable dessert that truly lives up to its whimsical reputation. And don’t forget to keep an eye out for the iconic Mickey Ears that often adorn drinks and desserts, adding a touch of Disney charm to every bite.

Disneyland is not only known for its iconic attractions and enchanting atmosphere but also for its incredible food events that take place throughout the year. Let’s dive into some of the most anticipated culinary celebrations:

A Dazzling Journey Through Light: My Sensorio Experience in Paso Robles || ThereGoesSaraRose.com

Step into Sensorio’s enchanting world in Paso Robles with Sara Rose, where Bruce Munro’s “Light at Sensorio” weaves magic. Sensorio is more than art; it’s a captivating fusion of technology and nature, a brief escape into a world of light and wonder.

TRAVEL. CAPTURE. CREATE. ThereGoesSaraRose.com

After a rejuvenating week away, I’m back to share the excitement of new adventures and the beauty of exploration. This time, my journey takes an enchanting turn as I unravel the mesmerizing world of Sensorio in Paso Robles, California. The hiatus was not just a break to focus on family but a chance to gather stories, write about my breathtaking moments, and recharge my wanderlust-filled soul. Join me as I delve into the immersive landscapes of light and color that Sensorio has to offer, a true spectacle that adds a vibrant chapter to California’s diverse tapestry. Buckle up, fellow explorers – let’s illuminate our senses and dive into the enchantment that awaits at my Favorite travel spot of 2023, Sensorio!

The urge to visit Sensorio began years ago, after seeing an online advertisement for its installation. And I finally made it, in 2023! As I stepped into the enchanting world of Sensorio in Paso Robles, California, I found myself immersed in the captivating brilliance of Bruce Munro’s permanent outdoor exhibit, “Light at Sensorio.” The magical ambiance and the seamless integration of art, technology, and nature created an unforgettable experience.

The Artistic Landscape

Featuring four stunning installations by the internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro, Sensorio is a visual feast. The expansive “Field of Light” is Munro’s largest artwork globally, with over 100,000 stemmed spheres delicately illuminating the landscape, painting it with morphing colors that mirror the undulating terrain. Adjacent to this, the “Light Towers” pay homage to Paso Robles’ wine country with 69 towers composed of more than 17,000 wine bottles, illuminated to an inspiring musical score.

New Marvels: Gone Fishing and Fireflies

Adding another layer of wonder to Sensorio are Munro’s latest creations unveiled in May 2023. “Gone Fishing” and “Fireflies,” nestled in a small valley beside Light Towers, extend the exhibit by another half-acre. Powered by solar energy, these exhibits, with their whimsical playfulness and ethereal glow, invite visitors to engage with the landscape on a profound level.

Terrific Terrace Experiences

For those seeking an elevated experience, the Terrace offerings are a must. The Terrace Experience provides exclusive access to a private terrace with guaranteed seating, priority entry, private restrooms, an Airstream bar, fire-side tables, heaters, and the best views of the exhibition. There is n reserved seating but it is a cozy place to rejuvenate before and after a chilly walk around the exhibit! The Terrace Experience + Platter includes admission, a drink ticket, and a choice between a charcuterie or crudité platter. As a foodie, I definitely had to partake! I make myself charcuterie boards as a dinner-choice often, and I find a better description for the “Platter” to be a large snack tray. However, Sensorio is beautiful enough that I wouldn’t mind forking over more funds for a restaurant-level platter-experience in the future. Never fear, if you are still hungry, there are additional food and vendor options available.

Eventful Evenings

To make the most of Sensorio, consider the event hours based on the sunset time of each month. From November through May, the exhibit comes alive with captivating displays. Extended holiday hours provide additional opportunities to witness the magic. I chose to arrive at their opening and not only was the transition stunning, it is an indescribable experience to partake in a group experiencing organic, collective wonder and awe.

The Future of Sensorio

Sensorio, at the intersection of art, technology, and nature, is not just an exhibition; it’s a destination for entertainment, exploration, meditation, adventure, and delight. As it continues to evolve, future attractions will include additional art exhibits, a hotel, and a conference center, promising even more reasons to return.

In the words of Smithsonian Magazine, Munro’s art is “stunning,” (2019) and after my Sensorio experience, I couldn’t agree more. This is not merely art to view but art to feel, an immersive journey that leaves an indelible mark on the senses. Sensorio truly lives up to its reputation as one of “50 Places to Visit,” (2020) offering a mesmerizing escape into the world of light and wonder.

As an artistic designer, my muse thrives on the wings of travel, recognizing the invaluable synergy between relaxation and creativity. Sensorio stands out as a haven where nature, technology, and art converge in a mesmerizing dance of light and wonder. Stepping into this immersive environment is not just a physical journey; it’s a deliberate act of allowing my mind to unwind and absorb the artistic beauty around. In the tapestry of Sensorio, relaxation becomes imperative—a gateway to unlocking the full potential of creative expression. Removing oneself from the familiar environment into the embrace of another, like Sensorio, becomes a catalyst for rejuvenation and mental clarity, laying the foundation for inspired artistic creations in the days to come.
